Dedra and Scottie Kaylor now own Common Ground Coffeehouse in downtown Beaufort and have plans for renovations and other changes.
Dedra Kaylor's ideas tumbled out as she relaxed on the back porch of Common Ground Coffeehouse on Thursday. The new owner envisioned how a little paint, some art and new menu items could bring "pop" and "zazz" to the downtown Beaufort business.
But not everything will change with the new ownership.
"One thing we're certainly going to continue is the coffeehouse feeling," her husband, Scottie Kaylor, said.
Never miss a local story.
The Kaylors recently relocated from Charlottesville, Va., where they own Miller's Downtown, a restaurant and bar well-known to fans of Dave Matthews as the place where he tended bar and formed his band decades ago. That was all well before the Kaylors bought it, Dedra Kaylor said, but Dave Matthews fans tend to flock there to this day.
They said they fell in love with Beaufort and the downtown while renting a home short-term on Craven Street. After getting through the hottest months of the year, they decided to make the visit permanent.
"We figured, if you love it in summer, you'll love it all year," Scottie Kaylor said.
Scottie Kaylor saw the coffee shop, at 102 West St. Extension on the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park, listed for sale online and the couple leapt. They're seeking a more permanent home downtown and working on plans for the coffee shop. That includes spending six days in Idaho learning how to roast their own coffee beans.
Coffee will remain the focus, but the Kaylors are considering whether to expand the market and cafe with new menu items or to go the "complete opposite direction" and sell gelato, Dedra Kaylor said.
New baked goods are already being sold, and Dedra said she's caught a baking bug and is turning out cakes and cookies.
"Baking is fun, if you can find a calm, quiet place and have the time," she said.
Renovations planned include painting, new furniture, porch repairs and the addition of local art.
