Two longtime Hilton Head Island vacation rental companies will combine their more than 500 properties into one enterprise starting Jan. 1, they announced Wednesday.
Executives from both firms said the merger will give the new company a bigger presence throughout the island.
"It just made sense," said Mike Wood, general manager of Hilton Head Vacation Rentals. "The two companies combined are pretty comparable, but there's not a lot of overlap as far as inventory."
Never miss a local story.
The new management company will compete with larger firms such as Island Getaway and ResortQuest, Wood said.
The merging companies will keep their names and separate websites, according to a news release.
The combined inventory will be displayed on both websites, the release said.
"The way the Internet works, with exposure and traffic, we already have two established names," said Mark Westbrook, broker-in-charge at Resort Rentals of Hilton Head Island.
Hilton Head Vacation Rentals has been in business since 1979 and manages 271 short-term rental properties. The management firm mostly oversees condominiums, Wood said, and has a solid presence on the north end. A third of the firm's properties are at the Island Club of Hilton Head on Folly Field Road, he said.
Resort Rentals of Hilton Head Island has been in business since 1958 and maintains 235 rental homes and condos, the release said.
Its concentration is on the south end, including properties at Shipyard Plantation, Sea Pines and Forest Beach.
