A locally-owned jewelry store and a burger restaurant will join a handful of businesses planning to open at the new Shelter Cove Towne Centre next year.
Heritage Fine Jewelry and Jake's Wayback Burgers recently signed letters of intent with the center's developers to open new locations in spring 2014.
Mall manager Roni Allbritton said several other businesses have signed letters of intent and will be announced in coming weeks.
The jewelry store will move from its current location at Pineland Station, according to store manager Doug Safe.
Established in 1975 by Safe's mother, Patti Catalano, the family-run business has operated on the island since 1990.
Safe said Pineland Station is past due for a renovation "and we don't want to deal with the reconstruction process and put our customers through that."
"The move is bittersweet and is something we thought long and hard about, and we're excited about the new facility at Shelter Cove."
Safe said the business was courted "pretty hard" by mall developers.
"Unfortunately, this side of the island has gotten a little rougher over the years," Safe said. "But we have such a local following, we know customers will follow us anywhere."
Founded in 1991 in Newark, Del., Jake's Wayback Burgers "is a fast-casual restaurant chain with a reputation for fresh burgers and thick, hand-dipped milkshakes," according to a news release.
An attempt Thursday to reach a company representative was unsuccessful.
The company has more than 70 locations coast-to-coast, according to its website. The Shelter Cove location would be its second in South Carolina; the other is in Spartanburg. A franchise is also planned in Clemson, according to the website.
The businesses join a handful of tenants that have committed to leasing space at the new shopping center, including Jos. A Bank, already at Shelter Cove Mall, and a SERG Group restaurant.
The Shelter Cove Towne Centre will be a 42-acre outdoor mall at the site of the former Mall at Shelter Cove. It will include several single-story shops, cafes and restaurants situated between a new Kroger grocery store currently under construction and the existing Belk department store that anchored the mall.
Mall developers Blanchard & Calhoun Commercial also are crowd-sourcing suggestions for more stores and restaurants on Popularise.com. An attempt Thursday to reach a Blanchard & Calhoun representative was unsuccessful.
Mall construction is expected to be mostly completed by February, Allbritton said.
A final phase of the project would add 210 apartments with views of Broad Creek east of the mall.
A relocated, five-acre park will bisect the shopping center. The Town of Hilton Head Island has agreed to split the park's cost -- expected to be about $4.5 million -- with the developers.
