Two wrecks on the bridges connecting Hilton Head Island and the mainland shortly after 8 a.m. Wednesday delayed morning commuters heading onto the island and caused a traffic backup stretching several miles into Bluffton.
Firefighters from the Bluffton Township Fire District and members of the S.C. Highway Patrol responded to a two-vehicle accident on the bridge over Skull Creek, the J. Wilton Graves Bridge. That accident caused one of the vehicles involved, pictured, to catch fire, Capt. Randy Hunter said.
One person was taken to the hospital as a result of the accident.
The backup began when passing drivers slowed down to watch the car burn, Lance Cpl. Bob Beres of Highway Patrol said.
En route to that accident, firefighters received a call about a four-vehicle wreck in the eastbound lanes of the bridge that spans Mackays Creek — the Karl S. Bowers Bridge. No injuries resulted from the second accident, according to Hunter.
Lanes were opened after crews removed wreckage from the bridge.
