Authorities say a 22-year-old woman accused of throwing her 3-year-old daughter off the balcony of a Beaufort apartment complex last month hasn't offered a motive in the incident.
Police Chief Matt Clancy said he doesn't know why the child was severely beaten and possibly stabbed Dec. 19 before she was thrown from the third-floor balcony of the Cross Creek Apartment Complex off Ambrose Run.
Shayla Bryan was charged with attempted murder and remains in the county detention center after being denied bond, according to the jail log.
Investigators were called to Bryan's apartment complex, where they found Dionna Hagood with injuries consistent with a fall. They later determined the child had been beaten and possibly stabbed before the fall.
Hagood is being treated at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Police described her injuries as "severe" soon after she was admitted. A hospital spokeswoman declined to provide an update on her condition Wednesday.
Several neighbors declined comment Wednesday, and attempts to contact the child's family for an update on her condition were unsuccessful.
Bryan's arrest last month was her first as an adult in Beaufort County, court records indicate.
If convicted, Bryan faces as many as 30 years in prison, according to state law.
