How to help

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Volunteers are needed Nov. 23 when The Link will set up all of the food in the Seafarer Center in Port Royal. People are needed to help organize, inventory items, purchase items to fill in what has not been collected and fill and deliver the boxes by that evening.

THANKSGIVING BOXES

The group hopes to fill each box with frozen turkeys, bags of potatoes, boxes of stuffing, canned green beans, cranberry sauce, yams and rolls. A full meal can be sponsored for $25, which includes a 12-pound turkey.

The Link is bringing The Giving to town.

The Giving is a program to help needy families who prefer to cook their own Thanksgiving meal at home, and it's accepting donations. The Link, a contemporary community-focused Beaufort church, is collecting donations of food and money to buy the ingredients to place in boxes for families who are requesting assistance.

The Giving, a night to give thanks and to give to others, will culminate with a special service from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 22 at Holiday Inn Suites at 2225 Boundary St. in Beaufort. The service begins at 6 p.m. where tables will be set up to hold donations.

In addition to the "Celebration of Thanks" service, there will be music from the church band and games such as a "Pimp My Turkey" competition for the kids and fun-loving adults. Cell phone texters are invited to the "Thanksing" competition to see who can text the fastest what they are most thankful onto an oversized computer screen.

"The idea is to raise support to take care of people who can't provide their own meal," said Mike Green, The Link pastor.

Concerned that the down economy might make it harder for families to celebrate this year, Green came up with The Giving as a solution.

Some of the 20 families who have been referred by The Salvation Army, the Department of Social Services, the United Way and HELP of Beaufort include a single mother with four children younger than 5 and a mother who lives on disability and has a child who is mentally disabled.

"Yes, we have lost a lot and it has been a rough year, but Thanksgiving has been about being thankful for what you do have," Green said.

"It is a time of reminding people of how much we do have and that's the goal," he said.

The event is expected to provide for 50 to 100 needy families.

Also included in each box will be information about the area's resources provided for those in need through the Community Service Organization.

The Link is located at 1053 Otter Circle in Beaufort.
