A ministry. I had cancer twice and just retired on disability. At my church I started a cancer ministry, Milbrey's Cancer Ministry. When you first find out you have cancer, you're scared to death. You don't know what you're supposed to be doing or who you're supposed to be talking to or what happens next. I named it after a friend of mine, Milbrey Gnann, who walked me through my cancer. She'd had cancer and passed away a year ago.
A little help. Milbrey helped me through everything. She was my mentor and she helped me to be calm through everything. I didn't understand what some of the medical terms were, and she explained them to me. She helped me find wigs. We prayed and we cried together. Without her help, I wouldn't have made it.
Paying it forward. I felt there were people in Beaufort who needed help. I basically followed everything that Milbrey did for me to help others. I'm able to make food for people and their families, visit with them and just help them get through.
The fight. It's a blessing to me. It helps me to realize they're being taken care of. When they're being taken care of I feel better about the situation for them. If you could see the looks in their eyes and they're scared and don't know where to turn ... I help people know how to take care of themselves, and know what they're up against.
Keeping faith. Through my faith I have the peace of God. When you have the Holy Spirit, you know you're going to make it no matter what. When I pray, I ask God what he wants me to do to help these people. And all of a sudden there's a phone call. Port Royal United Methodist is such a sweet and comforting place. It's the whole church that pulls together to do this.
