The Pregnancy Center and Clinic of the Lowcountry on Hilton Head Island works with pregnant women to help them understand that they have choices, and one of those is adoption.
"No matter what the source, adoption is an option that needs to be considered," said Dr. Vera Bailey, executive director of the center.
To this end, the Pregnancy Center is sponsoring a free screening of "October Baby," at 7 and 9 p.m. March 12 at Park Plaza Cinema.
"October Baby," is a Christian-themed film about a young woman named Hannah who was adopted at birth. Hannah embarks on a journey to learn about the circumstances of her birth, discovering that her birth mother had tried to abort her.
Bailey said another pregnancy center had suggested the film as it tells a compelling story of adoption.
She said the Lowcountry center's purpose is to council women in their decision-making, not to push them in one direction or another.
"We don't promote adoption because we don't want to be accused of pushing a woman to give up a child for adoption when they would have preferred another option," Bailey said.
The center is also working to dispel negative notions of adoption.
"It is very hard, especially when it is viewed as giving a baby away," Bailey said. "You don't 'give a baby away,' but place it in a loving home."
No matter what a woman chooses, Bailey says, the center is a place where their decisions will not be judged, good or bad.
"We are not God. We're not a judge. We're not a jury," she said. "We will never condemn (the women) because that is not our place."
