When Shonn Keels crushes a foot-thick stack of concrete with his bare hands, he gets attention.
That's exactly what the former U.S. Navy rescue swimmer is hoping for when he and others perform feats of strength at 7 p.m. tonight and Sunday at Journey Church in Bluffton.
Keels is a member of Team Impact, a group of elite athletes described as "some of the strongest men on the planet," who will demonstrate their physical talents while sharing inspirational messages.
The team "gets the attention to draw a crowd, then shares their message of hope and inspiration," said Heath Cave, event director.
Never miss a local story.
Feats of human strength promised will include breaking baseball bats in half -- even an aluminum bat -- rolling up frying pans into a "steel burrito," squeezing full soda cans until they pop and ripping thick phone books in half.
Keels is a power lifter and bench press champion, having benched more than 500 pounds. A graduate of the University of South Carolina and Luther Rice Seminary, he is a former senior pastor, a motivational speaker, lead evangelist, entrepreneur and author.
Also appearing in Bluffton will be former professional wrestler "Mr. World Class" Chip Minton. He's also a former Olympic bobsledder. He won a bronze medal in the four-man event in the 1997 World Championships in St. Moritz, Switzerland.
Admission to the event is free. The church is at 290 New River Parkway (across from University of South Carolina Beaufort), Bluffton.
