Prayers from people of all faiths will be cast from both sides of the Broad River on Thursday during the 60th annual National Day of Prayer. The annual observance is held the first Thursday of May to pray for our nation.
HILTON HEAD ISLAND
The service begins at noon Thursday at Hilton Head Island Town Hall (off Wexford Drive). The theme is "A Mighty Fortress is Our God" and is based on the verse from Psalm 91:2: "I will say to the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."

The observance begins at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Beaufort County Complex Courthouse at Ribaut Road and Boundary Street in Beaufort. There will be time for public and private prayer. The formal prayer time will be led by local clergymen of various Christian denominations. The focus will be to pray for our nation, its leaders, local and state officials, educators, America's youth, the unity of God's people, and the American family. Those who cannot attend are encouraged to stop where they are and pray at noon.

"The Opera of Life" will be presented at 6:30 p.m. today at The Cross, 168 Martin Luther King Drive, St. Helena Island. For the seventh year, Bennie Dudley of New York will present the cross program. Seven local ministers will speak.

Bishop Will Willimon will speak at the 8:30 and 11:30 a.m. services today at Lowcountry Presbyterian Church, Bluffton. Willimon has written 60 books and sold more than 1.5 million copies, and is past dean of the chapel and professor of Christian ministry at Duke University. St. James Baptist Church Male Chorus & Pastor's Aide Board will sponsor a yard sale and dinners will be sold from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. today. The Island Men of the First Presbyterian Church are taking part in a national, day school pilot program to help people obtain their GEDs. Rabbi Brad Bloom will deliver a talk on the challenge of remembering the Holocaust in the 21st century. Cantorial soloists Judy Bluestone and Jaquelin Schmid will participate in the service, and there will be special music relating to the Holocaust.
