Tommy Bahama Golden Sun Rum, Barbados; $30
This is a very classy-tasting rum. It is made from blackstrap molasses and water naturally filtered through coral stone. Then it is aged in small barrels at a lower proof to maintain the classic flavors. Aromas of dried apricots, vanilla beans and blood oranges fill the nose, and when the first sip hits the mouth these become intense flavors along with delicate hints of clove and anise. All of the flavors perfectly marry into a smooth and lingering taste experience. It's terrific on the rocks, mixed into a mojito or with an orange liqueur over ice.
200 Mauta Valley Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand; $13
If you are looking for a classic example of a New Zealand sauvignon blanc that will not break the bank, then this should be your first choice. This wine has all the classic aromas. Lime zest and rain aromas fill the nose and get the taste buds in gear for the first sip. The flavors are fresh and come in waves -- layers of citrus acidity balanced with a creamy, sweet vanilla herbaceous note. This wine has some sweetness and some tartness. In essence, it's a perfect sauvignon balance -- not too sweet or overpowering. It would work well with shellfish or grilled chicken, especially over a mixed greens salad with a fruit and nut dressing.
