The ninth annual LIghthouse Awards recognize the best in design and construction
Last night, the awards were on the house at Hilton Head Island's Westin Resort, where nearly 300 people attended the ninth annual Lighthouse Awards to learn who judges selected as the Lowcountry's most talented builders.
Hosted by the Hilton Head Area Home Builders Association and SunTrust Bank, the awards ceremony honors quality craftsmanship and design excellence in the construction of homes.
"A record numbers of entries combined with increased market competition have made the 2008 Lighthouse Awards one of the most anticipated events of the year, for both our area's housing professionals and prospective homebuyers," said Ashley Feaster, executive officer of the Hilton Head Area Home Builders Association.
Awards are presented annually to builder members of the Hilton Head Area Home Builders Association.
Thirty builders -- including remodelers, custom builders and semi-custom builders -- submitted a record number of 87 entries and competed for five construction awards: Best Bath, Best Kitchen, Best Exterior, Best Detail Feature and Best Overall Home or Remodel.
The cost of construction of the homes entered ranged from $200,000 to more than $2.5 million. Each award was divided into categories so that homes in similar price ranges and construction types competed against one another.
Twelve judges came to Hilton Head Island to inspect each home entered in the competition. The judges included builders, remodelers, architects and industry professionals from Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and other areas of South Carolina. The judges split into four teams and spent three days visiting entries.
A night of suspense
At the gala, Master of Ceremonies Monty Jett announced the winners as attendees watched a slide presentation of the homes and their features. The many skilled subcontractors and suppliers who participated in the design and construction of the competing homes also were recognized at the gala. Winners received marble obelisk trophies representing lighthouses.
"In almost all of the categories, the separation between the runner-up and winner was only one or two points," said Dan Monroe, chairman of the 2008 Lighthouse Awards program.
"Each participant should be honored to be part of such a distinguished group of area building professionals," he added.
In addition to SunTrust, the title sponsor, other contributors worked hard to make the Lighthouse Awards possible, including Lighthouse Awards Chairman Dan Monroe, LowCountry Home Magazine, and committee members Chris Cleland of Cleland Site Prep, Deborah Karambelas of Karambelas Enterprises, Fran McKinney of Bank Meridian, Deborah Monroe of LowCountry Home Magazine, Ed Pitoniak of SunTrust Bank,
