Hilton Head High QB Julian receives offer from Arizona
Hilton Head Island High School quarterback Michael Julian picked up his first official offer Tuesday, as the University of Arizona and coach Rich Rodriguez reached out to the Seahawks' rising senior signal-caller.
"We talked about how he used to visit Hilton Head," Julian recalled of his phone conversation with Rodriguez. "We just kind of built a relationship. I have to call him tonight again and talk to him longer."
The offer will likely be the first of many for Julian, who completed 137 of 304 passes for 1,884 yards with 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 2011. He completed 45.07 percent of his passes and registered a 106.83 pass efficiency rating.

COLUMBIA -- Few heads were hung low in the Hilton Head Island High School soccer team's huddle Saturday afternoon. Even fewer tears were shed.
The outcome didn't go in their favor, but the bar has officially been set for the Seahawks.
"Everything we put into this season, it was worth something," junior Chris MacMurray said. "We won Lower State. Farthest team in Hilton Head boys history. We've got to hold our heads high."

Bluffton High School will hold its Black-Silver game at 6 tonight. There is no admission, but donations are welcome. The Bobcats are trying to raise money for more helmets and uniforms to accommodate an increase in players.
There will be season passes for sale, and for the first time, reserved stadium seating will be sold in advance. The Bobcats also will be selling 10 preferred tailgating spots.

The responses he got weren't exactly encouraging.
"Phrases you don't like to hear," he said.

Five area soccer players have been named to this year's all-state team, headlined by a quartet of Hilton Head Island High School players headed to state championship games this weekend.
Senior forward Ruben Romero and junior midfielder Chris MacMurray were both named to the Class 3-A boys team for the Seahawks, who are appearing in their first state title game Saturday against Fort Mill. MacMurray has netted three game-winning goals this year for Hilton Head High while Romero may be the first attacking player from the school to be named to the all-state team, according to coach Wayne Quinlan.
Romero will also join Jessica Bonilla of the Hilton Head High girls team at this year's North-South Soccer Classic.

Hilton Head boys soccer joins girls team with playoff berth in state championship
The Hilton Head Island High School girls soccer team better make room on the bus to Columbia.
The boys are coming along for the ride.
A day after the Lady Seahawks clinched a berth in the Class 3-A state championship game with a win over Brookland-Cayce, the Hilton Head High boys secured a spot of their own, as a strong second half powered the Seahawks to a 3-0 win over North Myrtle Beach on Tuesday night in the Lower State championship.

AC Flora defeated Chapin in a playoff to capture the Class 3-A boys golf state championship Tuesday at Coastal Carolina University's Hackler Course, while Hilton Head Island High School finished 19 shots back in fourth place on a rainy day in Conway.

Orischak earned all-state honors, shooting a 76 on Tuesday and finishing sixth overall with a 149 total. Hilton Head High's other scores from the final day were 83s from Gavin Lindstrom, Chris O'Donnell and Troy Hoisington.

(full story)HHH boys believe fate on their side in soccer playoffs
The Hilton Head Island High boys soccer team is finding it difficult to doubt itself these days. That's easy to understand after the way the Seahawks have seemingly found every way imaginable to win in recent weeks.
"I told them that I thought it was obvious that this team has been blessed and that there's something going on here that's bigger than all of us," Seahawks coach Wayne Quinlan said. "Every one of their heads was nodding up and down. I think that gives us confidence."
Whether it be in the waning moments of regulation, overtime or via penalty kicks, the Seahawks continue to find their way into the next round of the Class 3-A playoffs. They will try to resume that streak at home tonight against North Myrtle Beach, where a win would send Hilton Head High to the state championship game for the first time.

Beaufort High School golf coach Brook Dixon thinks his team has as good a shot as anybody in the Class 4-A Boys State Golf Championship that starts today at the Furman University Golf Course in Greenville.
"I'm looking at the competition and it's stiff," Dixon said. "The course is really tough. But I like our chances. We're taking some kids up there that can really play."
The Eagles' top two players -- Taylor Simonsen and Josh Fickes -- have played the course before and should be able to give their teammates some insight. And Dixon says his team is just starting to come around.

If defending state champion Hilton Head Island High School is going to return to the Class 3-A girls state soccer championship game Friday, it's first going to have to pass a difficult test on the road.
The Seahawks (23-2) travel to face Brookland-Cayce at 7 tonight.
"I expect my girls to go out and play their best," Seahawks coach Ernie Suozzi said. "They're a good team. We're going to have to play well, possess the ball well and be patient.

Hilton Head High boys fight off Chapin, advance to Lower State soccer finals
Hilton Head Island High School boys soccer coach Wayne Quinlan has been carrying the folded piece of paper around in his pocket for nearly three weeks.
It's filled with names and notes, and on one side across the page, it lists the five players he would use, in order, should the Seahawks be involved in a game that came down to penalty kicks.
The fifth player on that list? Tyler Betts.
(full story)Hilton Head High boys claim 4x800 gold medal for 6th straight year

(full story)Prep Roundup, May 12: Hilton Head High girls move on to Lower State soccer final
The Hilton Head Island High School girls soccer team had a tougher time with its third-round playoff opponent than with its first two -- but not too tough.
The Seahawks rolled to a 5-1 win over St. James on Friday night in Murrells Inlet, moving on to Monday's Class 3-A Lower State championship game at Brookland-Cayce. The Bearcats advanced with a 7-0 win over Bluffton on Friday.
"This game was tough," Hilton Head High coach Ernie Suozzi said of the win at St. James. "They have a lot of good club players, they came out scrappy. We settled down and got into our possession game. We wore them down."

Hilton Head High tops AC Flora, moves on in boys soccer playoffs
As the Hilton Head Island High School boys soccer team slowly dispersed after Thursday night's 3-0 home victory in the Class 3-A playoffs against A.C. Flora, there was suddenly a buzz among the remaining players, parents and fans.
Someone -- nobody seemed to know who started it -- started the rumor that Chapin had upset defending Lower State champion Myrtle Beach and the Seahawks would have a home game Saturday night instead of a four-hour bus ride to the Grand Strand.
When Hilton Head High coach Wayne Quinlan finally got a text 10 minutes later from Chapin's coach confirming the win, it was the best news he'd gotten all day.
(full story)Whale Branch boys ready to make run at state track title this weekend
This could be the year for Whale Branch. It's not like it's been a long wait, though.
In only its second year of existence, Whale Branch has to be considered one of the favorites to take home the Class 1-A boys championship at this weekend's S.C. Track and Field State Championships at Spring Valley High School in Columbia.
The Warriors finished sixth last year in their first state meet. The return of the core of that team, coupled with the addition of senior sprinter Andre Watson, has the Warriors' coaches thinking title.
