Five area soccer players have been named to this year's all-state team, headlined by a quartet of Hilton Head Island High School players headed to state championship games this weekend.
Senior forward Ruben Romero and junior midfielder Chris MacMurray were both named to the Class 3-A boys team for the Seahawks, who are appearing in their first state title game Saturday against Fort Mill. MacMurray has netted three game-winning goals this year for Hilton Head High while Romero may be the first attacking player from the school to be named to the all-state team, according to coach Wayne Quinlan.
Romero will also join Jessica Bonilla of the Hilton Head High girls team at this year's North-South Soccer Classic.

AC Flora defeated Chapin in a playoff to capture the Class 3-A boys golf state championship Tuesday at Coastal Carolina University's Hackler Course, while Hilton Head Island High School finished 19 shots back in fourth place on a rainy day in Conway.
Hilton Head High was led by a player who doesn't even go to the school yet -- Andrew Orischak, a seventh-grader. Orischak earned all-state honors, shooting a 76 on Tuesday and finishing sixth overall with a 149 total. Hilton Head High's other scores from the final day were 83s from Gavin Lindstrom, Chris O'Donnell and Troy Hoisington.

(full story)Girls teams set for high school soccer playoffs
Ernie Suozzi has been repeating himself all season. He said it before the year began, he echoed it again during region play and preached it once more entering the playoffs.
"The only team that I feel could beat us in-state is ourselves," he said.
Suozzi -- the head coach of the Hilton Head Island High girls soccer team -- knows a thing or two about winning teams. After all, the Seahawks' head man has directed two of his last four clubs to state championships, including last year, when Hilton Head High knocked off Fort Mill, 4-2, in Columbia.
(full story)Williams leads HHCA boys at state track meet
Hilton Head Christian Academy track coach Tommy Lewis wanted the best from his athletes Saturday, hoped they would produce at the highest level to close the program's inaugural season.
And while that didn't happen in all cases, Lewis and the Eagles left the SCISAA Class 3-A meet at Charleston optimistic.
"I think we built a lot of momentum going into next year," Lewis said. "I think the success of our runners, both at region and state, has everyone excited for next year. Hopefully we'll have more kids come out and build on this foundation."
(full story)Prep Roundup, May 5: Thomas Heyward baseball season stays alive
A dramatic rally in the seventh inning kept the Thomas Heyward Academy baseball team's season alive Friday night in Holly Hill, as the Rebels bounced back from a tough loss in the opener of their SCISAA Class 2-A second-round series to win Game 2.
Holly Hill Academy scored a run in the seventh inning of the first game Friday to edge the Rebels, 2-1. Bryan Lee Wade hit a third-inning home run for the Rebels' only run. Ryan Day pitched a complete game, taking the loss.
It looked as if the Rebels' season would be over later in the evening, with them trailing 8-2 going into the last inning of the second game. But Thomas Heyward came up with seven runs in the top of the seventh -- capped off by Taylor Cowart's two-run single -- to take a 9-8 lead.

On the boys side, Jamario Williams will take part in four events -- the 4x100 relay and the 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes. He'll be joined in the 4x100 by Tyler Chisholm, DeAngelo Clark and Alex Martin, who will also compete in the 400 hurdles.
(full story)Prep Roundup, May 3: Hilton Head High, Whale Branch fall in district title games
The defending state champion St. James Sharks -- and ace left-hander Anders DeShields -- were too much for Hilton Head Island High School to overcome, as the Seahawks were defeated in the Class 3-A District VIII baseball championship game Wednesday night in Murrells Inlet, 4-1.
DeShields, who also defeated the Seahawks earlier in the district tournament, held Hilton Head High to two hits. The junior had his best stuff working as scouts watched him propel the Sharks into the Lower State tournament.
"He's the real deal," Hilton Head High coach Chris Wells said. "He's probably the most polished pitcher we've seen all year."

(full story)Sweep gives Eagles berth in next round
The common feeling among the Hilton Head Christian Academy baseball team by the end of the night Monday might have been surprise.
After all, Eagles coach Danny Morgan reminded his team, only two of you have playoff experience. And this is a Christian Academy team that finished in the bottom of its region in 2011 and was forced to deal with personnel issues early in the season.
The Eagles aren't surpised at the success -- they know they have played well this season -- but might still be understanding how it is they're getting the job done.

Danny Morgan began noticing in January the improvement in his Hilton Head Christian Academy baseball team.
The Eagles missed the playoffs in Morgan's first season as head coach, going 4-15 in 2011 and winning one game in SCISAA Region 3-AAA. But after most of his players returned, Morgan noticed balls sticking in gloves and accurate throws in the infield.
What was thought a weakness before the season became a strength. The Eagles' defense helped them to an 11-7 record and No. 4 seed in the SCISAA Class 3-A playoffs.

Whitney Morrell put some punctuation on the end of the Bluffton softball team's postseason opener Thursday night, launching a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning to give the Bobcats a 14-3 victory over North Myrtle Beach in the first round of the District VII playoffs.
The Bobcats were cruising along comfortably with a 10-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when Morrell's slam ended it. She finished the night 2 for 4, also hitting a double, with six RBIs.

(full story)Prep Notebook, April 27: Hilton Head High's Drammis to attend MIT
The prospects of playing college basketball at a Division 1-A school were something that never truly appealed to Sabrina Drammis.
The Hilton Head Island High girls basketball star was more focused on the academic side of her future. That's why Drammis has decided to play for MIT next season and coach Sonia Raman. She will be enrolled in the computer science and electrical engineering program in the hopes of being involved in robotics, Seahawks coach Dave Greenberg said.
"Their coach followed Sabrina all summer from camp to camp hoping she would consider MIT as an option and that her credentials would be strong enough for her to be admitted -- and they were," Greenberg said. "Sabrina and her family are ecstatic about her being able to attend one of the best -- if not the best -- schools in the world as well as continuing her basketball career."
