The Mitchelville Preservation Project and the Hilton Head Island Land Trust will present a program featuring lecturer Asa Gordon, who will speak about the legacy of the U.S. Colored Troops who served in the Civil War. Many men from this unit served on Hilton Head and played an important role in protecting Mitchelville, the first self-governed freedmen's town in America.
The program will start at 5:15 p.m. May 31 at the Cherry Hill School at the corner of Beach City and Dillon roads. Following a reception, a ceremony at nearby Fort Howell will be held in remembrance of the troops.
