The first Santa Elena Regatta will begin with the Jean Ribaut Cup Saturday, commemorating the 450th anniversary of the Santa Elena colony’s establishment on Parris Island.
Nineteen Performance Handicap Racing Fleet sailboats, ranging from 18 to 44 feet long, are expected to sail in the Ribaut Cup in Port Royal Sound and the Beaufort River Saturday, according to a news release.
The Pedro Menendez Cup will be sailed on Sunday in the Beaufort River with 15 PHRF boats participating. The race begins at 10:30 a.m. and will be held in front of Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park.
Organizers said the races will be sailed as separate events, with results combined to crown an overall Santa Elena Regatta winner.
The cups are being held on back-to-back days to creat the first-ever Santa Elena Regatta, with the historic colony’s foundation and the Beaufort Yacht and Sailing Club as the event’s sponsors. The regatta is the opening event of the month long celebration of the colony’s anniversary.
