More than 100 people on about as many motorcycles thundered down the road from Okatie to Hilton Head Island on Sunday afternoon for a good cause.
These bikers were part of Santa’s entourage, bringing toys to The Deep Well Project, just like they have every year for the past 20 or so years.
The Holiday Toy Run typically brings about 150 people out each year, according to Stefan Patrick who coordinated the event. People from several different area motorcycle clubs joined in as did individual bikers and folks with cars full of toys to donate. Patrick said, “Everyone is welcome!”
Betsy Doughtie, executive director of The Deep Well Project, called this event “the highlight of our Christmas season.” The donation of gifts is a “huge help” for the organization that assisted more than 900 children on Hilton Head Island last year and expects the same — if not more — this year, she said.
“We’re helping a lot of kids because of them,” Doughtie said.
Those who wish to participate in the Empty Well fundraising campaign, which supports Deep Well’s operations, can mail contributions to The Deep Well Project, P.O. Box 5543, Hilton Head Island, SC 29938; drop them off at 80 Capital Drive; or go to deepwellproject.org.
