May River Theatre Co. presents "Company"
Director: Kelley Ard and Musical Director Beth Corry
Lead actors: The fourteen cast members include May River Theatre Co. veterans Chad Hsu as the lead, Bobby; Jennifer Green; Ellie Friedman Beck; Elizabeth Smith; Donna Capps; Jeremie Schudel; Ron Ruckle; Lyndsay Malphrus; Anna Schaffer and Bill Andrusic.
New to the theatre company are Frank Schuetz, Andrew Hillis, Madison Ogburn and Emily Rice.
The plot: "Company" is a musical comedy based on a book by George Furth with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Its plot revolves around Bobby -- a single man unable to commit fully to a steady relationship, let alone marriage -- the five married couples who are his best friends and his three girlfriends.
The story behind the show: The original production was nominated for a record-setting 14 Tony Awards and won six. It was originally produced and directed on Broadway by Harold Prince, with orchestration by Jonathan Tunick and is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International in New York. "Company" was chosen for May River Theatre Co. by Jodi DuPuis, the theatre's former director who passed away last January.
Director's take: I feel the show is worth seeing because it is a comedy, so it's a fun way to spend your evening at the theatre. It is especially enjoyable for the adult audience. People can relate to the different relationships in the show. "Company" reflects the ups and downs of marriage. There are 13 featured performers and just one lead who share the stage, so you get to know the personalities. There is no nameless character or chorus.
Behind the scenes: The show consists of vignettes with each couple. We rehearsed separately over the last couple of months. Seeing the cast's reactions to each other's scenes confirmed just how well-scripted and hilarious "Company" is.
