"4000 Miles" at Hilton Head Theatre by the South Carolina Repertory Company
Director: Chip Egan
Lead actors: Shirley Sarlin as Vera, Justin Walker as Leo, Shannon Weber as Rebecca and Jacquelyn Wyer as Amanda
The plot: Looking for a place to crash, Leo concludes a tumultuous 4000-mile cross-country bike trip at 3 a.m. the Greenwich Village apartment of his 91-year-old grandmother, Vera. His baggage is considerably more than the panniers on his bicycle. Over the next three weeks, Leo and Vera figure out how to navigate their generational distance and the family dysfunction that humorously follows them both to a surprising and uplifting resolution.
The story behind the show: "4000 Miles" is a 2013 Pulitzer Prize finalist by Amy Herzog that is a co-production between South Carolina Repertory Company and the Warehouse Theatre in Greenville. The same director, cast and designers will remount the production in March 2014 in the Upstate. Both the repertory company's Artistic Director Pat Haskell and Warehouse Theatre Artistic Director Paul Savas have partnered with Clemson University to execute the production with the help of Clemson students, who assisted in the construction of the set.
Director's take: "4000 Miles" is a compelling and resonant story of the victory of family love over dysfunction. Amy Herzog masterfully crafts an absorbing and funny chronicle that draws on her own childhood family saga.
Behind the scenes: "4000 Miles" launches the South Carolina Repertory Company's 22nd season by bringing back Shirley Sarlin, who appeared in the company's triumphant 1999 production of "Grace and Glorie" as Grace.
