Shakespeare Rep, a new Shakespeare company, and the University of South Carolina Beaufort are presenting "Macbeth" at 7:30 p.m. through April 26 at the UCSB Center for the Arts, 801 Carteret St., Beaufort.
The play is produced by Jeff Evans, founder of Lowcountry Shakespeare, and directed by Debra Charlton, founder and artistic director of Shakespeare Rep. Charlton has a doctorate from the University of Texas, where she specialized in Shakespearean performance, production and pedagogy. She also studied at the Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies in Oxford, England and has directed an extensive list of productions, including "King Lear," "The Taming of the Shrew," "A Midsummer Night's Dream," "Romeo and Juliet" and "The Winter's Tale."
Charlton chose "Macbeth" as Shakespeare Rep's debut production because it is one of her favorite plays and one of Shakespeare's most accessible. In a press release, Charlton said working with Shakespeare is like peeling an onion: "Layer upon layer of new discovery. Always fresh and exciting."
Santiago Sosa, a Chicago resident, will play Macbeth. Sosa is a professional actor with a master's in theater. Erin Dailey, a Julliard-trained Beaufort resident, will play Lady Macbeth.
"The standard idea of the Macbeths is that you've got this hapless, hen-pecked guy who's driven to do all these terrible things by his horrid, shrewish, power-crazed wife," Evans said. "What tends to get missed is that, underneath all that, these are two people who really love each other. This is a love story. Santiago and Erin are bringing that love story to the forefront. ... They're bringing something really sexy to this show, and it deepens the story."
Tickets are $15, $12 for seniors and $8 for students. Tickets: 843-521-4145 or www.uscbcenterforthearts.com
