Hilton Head Christian Academy presents "Annie" from March 27-29.
Director: Rhonda Stones
Lead actors: Jacey Robinson, Holden Whitt, Mary Meghan Burke, Haigler Woods, Christian Hamby, Joseph Lankowski, C.T. Davis.
The plot: This musical is the time-honored and familiar story of Annie, a red-headed orphan who is "borrowed" by a billionaire for Christmas, much to the chagrin of the orphanage director. As Annie is enjoying life with Daddy Warbucks, he finds he loves parenting and wants to adopt her. Chaos ensues as he tries to find her real parents and the orphanage director and her brother plot a devious plan to "steal" Annie and the money offered by Daddy Warbucks.
The story behind the show: "Annie" was inspired by the "Little Orphan Annie" comic strip, which began running in the New York Daily News in 1924. The musical is celebrating its 36th year on Broadway. This show was chosen by Hilton Head Christian Academy for its family values, upbeat music and especially for the wide range of ages for actors. This is HHCA's first show that combines middle school with upper school.
Director's take: "In this time of economic uncertainty and bad news, 'Annie' is a wonderful, fun-filled show that reminds us that there have been bad times in our country before and we survived it," Stones said. "The music is amazing, and the show is choreographed by none other than the fabulous Pattie Mauer. The coolest thing about this production is watching the actors relate to one another and just have fun together."
Behind the scenes: "Saturday practices are especially enjoyable as each cast member sits down together and eats a meal that a parent has provided," Stones said. "This is wonderful time to watch middle-schoolers mix with seniors."
The male star, Daddy Warbucks, decided to audition as an afterthought, and his singing was so impressive that he is the first freshman to be cast as a lead at a Christian Academy production.
