In her State of the State address Wednesday night, Governor Nikki Haley recognized "American Idol" season 12 winner and St. Helena Island native Candice Glover, calling her "a wonderful young woman who portrays South Carolina in the best possible light."
Haley said Glover is "an inspiration" and "a shining example of what it means to never give up," referring to Glover's three "American Idol" auditions before she made it to the live show.
"Candice Glover wowed the nation when she won American Idol. And when I met her, she wowed me," Haley said. "You have made your home state incredibly proud." Glover's Twitter fans reported that the singer was in Columbia at the governor's address.
Additional accolades Glover recently received include a nomination for outstanding new artist in the NAACP's Image Awards and an invitation to perform at this year's Trumpet Awards, which honor the accomplishments of black Americans.
Glover is also expected to appear on a future episode of "Idol" to promote her album, "Music Speaks."
