Winning "American Idol" is about more than talent, Candice Glover says.
"Yes, I think it's based on talent first," Glover, 23, said in a recent phone interview. "But there's also a star power and versatility and a drive ... that will determine who stays."
At 8 p.m. tonight, the St. Helena Island native and Kree Harrison will compete in the one-hour "Idol" finale. Each will sing three songs: a selection by show creator Simon Fuller, the contestant's favorite performance from this season and a coronation song -- an original song written for each finalist that will be available for download on iTunes.
The winner of Season 12 will be announced during the results show, which airs from 8 to 10 p.m. Thursday on Fox.
The elusive "star power" that the winner of "Idol" must possess isn't just about looks, Glover said. It's not about having a glitzy wardrobe or professionally done hair and makeup.
"It's just a demeanor a star has," Glover said. "They're a humble person, but when they step on a stage, they command that stage."
Competing on "Idol," Glover channeled that star power by appearing confident in her performances. No matter how scared or nervous she was under the bright lights, she wanted to make clear each week: There's no place else I'd rather be.
"Even though I'm probably shaking or my heart's dropping, or I feel like I'm about to pass out, I still have that confidence that a star would have," Glover said.
That star power has been noticed by the judges. Last week, judge Nicki Minaj said it has set Glover apart and that she seems to have the most confidence on stage.
Judge Randy Jackson said it's what makes Glover's performance this season different from her previous two tryouts for the show.
After Glover sang in this season's Top 40, Minaj said she couldn't understand how Glover didn't make it on the show before.
But Jackson said they were seeing a different performer this season.
"You now believe you belong here," Jackson said.
