Rebecca Folsom has loved music for as long as she can remember. She grew up listening to James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Elton John, Grace Slick and Janis Joplin. At age 13 she began writing her own music and performing for audiences.
Folsom is also a poet and a fine artist. For her latest album, "Reunion," she decided to combine her talents by creating a painting and a poem for each song. When she goes on tour, she displays giclee prints for the audience to enjoy while listening to her music.
"It was an incredible process for me because I've always kept them separate," she said. "I've done the oil paintings and sold those in galleries. And I've done my music for years and years ... and I've also published two poetry books. And they were all kind of separate from each other. With this, I thought I ought to bring them all together. It's just been really exciting."
Folsom has traveled all the way from the Rocky Mountains of Colorado to share her artistic flair with the Lowcountry. She will perform May 4 at ARTworks in Beaufort.
Never miss a local story.
"Reunion" is Folsom's 10th album. She describes the album as folk Americana with a little bit of pop. She normally plays with her band, but she's doing a solo show tonight.
While she's in town, Folsom will also play during a yoga class at Yoga Chandra. She said she loves visiting Beaufort.
"It's like I'm married to the Rockies, but the lowlands are my little romantic love," she said. "I'm very fond of that area."
ARTworks transmedia publicity leader Lisa Annelouise Rentz said she was really pleased that Folsom reached out to the art center, adding that its blackbox theater is perfect for such an artful, personal event.
"I think Beaufort, in general, is really fortunate, really benefits from all the people who end up here," Rentz said. "When artists show up in town here -- professional career artists -- I think people should take that opportunity, and I think people want the opportunity. Beaufort's small, but it's not sleepy."
