The first female finalist on this season's "American Idol" was eliminated Thursday night.
It wasn't Candice Glover.
After a standout performance of The Cure's "Lovesong" last week, show mentor Jimmy Iovine was a little concerned about the St. Helena Island native this week.
But those concerns evaporated after her two performances on Wednesday night.
"When she did 'Straight Up' by Paula Abdul, I was really concerned because that song is just too narrow melodically for her," Iovine said. "Then ... she performed 'When You Believe' (by Mariah Carey and Whitey Houston) and I got to see her complete thought for the evening. She blew my mind ... . Not only is she a great singer, she's smart."
After the show Wednesday night, Abdul tweeted Glover that she loved the performance.
On Thursday night, the pop diva and former 'Idol' judge showed up to tell her in person, surprising Glover on stage.
"I've been watching this remarkable young lady week after week captivate the audience and I've got to tell you, I was really moved that you shared your beautiful vocals on a song that's been a best friend to me," Abdul told Glover. "I'm a big fan, and I've got to tell you, I'm the biggest fan ever now."
Janelle Arthur was eliminated Thursday night.
Glover will perform in the Top 4 Wednesday. The show airs from 8 to 10 p.m. on Fox.
