Wedding bells rang last Saturday for Leigh West and James Brown, who were married in a beautiful ceremony at The Church of the Cross. The afternoon was gorgeous with just a bit of nip in the air. Shell Hall was beautifully decorated for the reception. Music was provided by the band Ocean Hiway and they were spectacular, as always.

Leigh and James left for a wedding trip to Umbria in Italy and will make their home in beautiful downtown Bluffton. We wish them much happiness.

News and notes

• The Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra held its annual International Piano Competition this past week and it was a rousing success.

The master classes program was a favorite. Menahem Pressler was the competition's jury chairman and he was a charming and very attractive speaker at All Saints Church Episcopal Church. He spoke about how it was easier to find a wife than to find two people to play in his much-acclaimed Beaux Arts Trio. He is considered one of the world's most distinguished and honored musicians, with a career that has spawned over 50 years.

The other speakers at the master class lectures were outstanding, with lots of personality and humor. Next year I urge you to try to make these fabulous offerings part of your day. For information about the programs, call 843-842-2055.

• Corks Wine Co. is open in Calhoun Street Promenade. The wine bar specializes in gourmet small plates and delicious wines from all over the world. It would be a great place for a special occasion, birthday or just to meet friends.

• Don't forget to go see "Life on the May River," the new exhibit at Coastal Discovery Museum on Hilton Head Island. There are all sorts of wonderful pieces of art produced by some of Bluffton's most revered artists.

The May River is home to shrimp boats, oysters, birds and lots of sunbirds (Blufftonians). There are also talks planned by well-known scientists and historians to help us learn about Bluffton and why the May River is such an important part of our lives.

The events are free but space is limited so you must make reservations. Call 843-686-3033 ext. 221 for information.

• Beaufort County School Board members Laura Bush and George Wilson will host a Town Hall Forum at 7 p.m. March 20 at Bluffton High School to discuss the April 26 school bond referendum. These two Bluffton-area school board representatives will gladly answer any questions about the $162.7 million referendum.

Board of Education Chairman Fred Washington and Superintendent Valerie Truesdale also plan to be there.

• Congratulations to Oliver Brown on his victory in the election for Town Council, and thank you to Jeff Fulghum for his participation in the process.

Oliver's mother Sarah Brown would be so happy and I'm sure she is looking down on him with much pride. Sarah was a much-loved member of our community, where she was very involved with many organizations.

• Remember to register to win the HGTV Green Home, which was built in Traditions Hilton Head near Hardeeville. Visit www.hgtv.com/greenhome. HGTV will accept applications Friday through May 9. It opens for tours Friday and is valued at $850,000.

Bluffton tequila sunset

1 quart orange juice Publix Old Fashioned

2 cups Tequila

2 cups Pomegranate juice

2 cups crushed ice

Mix everything together and serve over crushed ice. Makes enough for 7 or 8 people. Go out on the dock and toast the fact that you are lucky to be in this special place. If there is no dock, no problem.
