Chance encounter with one of the South's best chefs
I was looking through some of my favorite magazines to see if I missed anything when I read them the first time around. In the November 2011 issue of Garden & Gun, there is an article on the 50 best Southern foods and where to find them. The House Smoked Trout Chopped Salad caught my attention because it sounded so unusual, as did the name of the restaurant that serves it, RouXbarb in Knoxville.
An even happier new year on heels of old one
As we nudge into the new year, I am sitting here nibbling on my last morsel of chocolate that my niece Anna brought from Holland. The delicious confections only amounted to six luscious tidbits, but half a piece a day has kept me awfully happy.
Old town Christmas decorations looking lovely
The winners for best old town Bluffton Christmas decorations were The Bluffton Oyster Co. on Wharf Street, Tabby Chic on Pritchard Street, The Cottage and Allison at Planters Mercantile on Calhoun Street.
Look out, below! Hickory trees shed their bounty
There are a plethora of hickory trees all over Bluffton. There are lots of big ones in our yard. They are so gorgeous most of the year, and then poof, hickory nuts come raining down on everything in the fall.
Be thankful we can buy Thanksgiving dinners
We all have many things to be thankful for. Not the least important is the fact that we don't have to forage for tomorrow's feast.
Words to help define society's ups and downs
Do you remember being a small child and suddenly the grownups would start spelling words when you were within earshot? I remember my sister, brothers and I being underfoot at our house and suddenly everything uttered sounded like a foreign language -- although sometimes it really was.
Mother Nature always has a show to put on
My daughter Tat and I were in Savannah last week walking around downtown when we became bystanders to an amazing scene. A red-tailed hawk and two squirrels were locked in a life and death scenario that, in some respects, was quite entertaining. The trio was in a tree in front of a hotel on Bull Street and had a group of about 30 enthralled in the life-and-death dance on a gorgeous fall day.
A great time awaits you at this year's arts and seafood festival
Sunday was a beautiful day for playing admiral to the 2011 Historic Bluffton Arts and Seafood Festival. Congratulations to sister and brother honorees Nancy and Bill Schilling. Both of these water-loving siblings deserved to reign over this fun day in their watery kingdom. I wish them many more happy years of ruling their "subjects" in the waters around us.
Pig roast, art auction offer rare chance to visit Ossabaw Island
Ossabaw Island is barrier island located off the Georgia coast. The island was privately owned for years but is now owned by Georgia and used as a site for research. In the early 1960s, the Torrey family -- who were the owners -- established The Ossabaw Island Project. The purpose of the project was to give persons of diverse backgrounds, i.e. business people, writers and artists, a chance to mingle and discuss any and all subjects. Renaissance Weekend, started by the Clintons, was patterned the same way. Guests were invited to stay, all expenses paid. My mother, a writer and artist, was among those invitees.
Temporary pets help make hotel stay a bit more friendly
I recently read a wonderful little snippet in the Sunday New York Times. Some hotels have acquired new members of their staff. A handful of establishments around the U.S. have decided man's best friend might really be just that, and dogs are showing up at hotels as temporary companions to travelers and greeters at the door. Guests may even take the dogs for a walk. Some hotels even have puppies from local shelters that can be walked -- and even adopted.
Missoni's debut at Target over before it started
The news that the venerable Italian family knitwear company, Missoni, was debuting at Target in September had fashionistas the world over on their toes.
Arrival of beautiful butterflies a sign of cooler times
Well, we have officially experienced the hottest, driest summer on record. Last week was marvelous, with low humidity and temperatures. Now that summer is gone for the year and fall is on the way, let us hope to break no more weather records.
Squeeze in some fun as summer winds down
There are a few more lazy weeks left in the summer holiday. Here in Bluffton we are nipping along with various fun things on our agenda. I have several things for you to try if you have company coming or want a fun family event to share before school starts.
Odd couple prove that silence isn't always golden
'The Case of the Sitting Duck." No, this is not the title of a Nancy Drew mystery. I was thinking about some of the crazy things I have experienced in my life at The Store over the years.
