We asked our readers to submit their favorite pranks for April Fools’ Day, and fools rushed in to share their top stunts and hoaxes. Suffice it to say, there are some dirty, rotten pranksters around town.
We voted, and have published three of our favorites here. These and all other submissions are posted on our Web site at islandpacket.com/aprilfools. Read them carefully to guard against becoming the victim of any practical jokes today.
And when you’re done reading, go out and try one of those new left-handed Whoppers. We hear they’re quite tasty.
Deborah Catton, Hilton Head Island
I don’t usually play practical jokes on people, but I did a good one on my sister about 10 years ago. It all started with a birthday gift I received from my brother. At the time, I was living in West Virginia but was working for a small college across the river in Ohio. The gift was Boyfriend in a Box, and it’s still available on the Internet!
Boyfriend in a Box came with 4-by-7-inch photo, suitable for framing, of a handsome guy, mine was Max the Millionaire. Other things came in the box, like notecards sent from Max, his description and messages to put on your desk at work. My office staff loved Max and would often tell me that he stopped in while I was at a meeting.
I don’t know how this all happened but one day I phoned my sister, Donne Paine, who had just gotten the job that she still has here on Hilton Head Island as an executive recruiter for Fortune Personnel Consultants of Hilton Head.
I made up an elaborate story about how I was walking along in the hall when the college president stopped me to introduce me to a visiting college vice president. I had to tell her that I forgot the name of the college he worked for because I knew she would look him up!
The story just kept growing. I told her that I had to give him a tour of the office and how much we talked and that he asked if he could call me after he got back from his trip. When I asked him where he was going, he said Hilton Head. What a coincidence! Since he didn’t know anyone on the island I suggested he stop in to see her and he said he would. I told her he would be there the next day in the afternoon. She bought it! Then I started to feel really guilty because she was so excited that I had met someone and kept calling me and asking me all about him.
After work, I rushed to FedEx and sent Max and his whole box to my sister’s office. He arrived promptly the next afternoon. The best part is that her whole office was waiting for him and she had gotten all dressed up to meet him!
She eventually sent Max back, but he got lost when I moved down here five years later. I think it’s time I try to find him.
