The Lawton Stables small-animal farm in Sea Pines just grew by three kids.

They might be cute now but it won't be long before these kids get gruff -- with beards and horns.

That's right, a goat gave birth to triplets Sunday, which Clemson University says is rare for the farm animal.

Marice Rushin, the stables' office manager, said she's not sure why, but this is the second unusual birth at Lawton in recent memory. Last year, a horse gave birth to twin foals.

The newest kids include two females and a male.

The male is white and weighs nearly 2 pounds. The females are a little smaller and have white and chestnut coats.

The staff was expecting the mother, which doesn't have a name, to give birth to twins because she was so large during pregnancy.

"But triplet goats, that's pretty unusual," Rushin said.

At only three days old, the kids have been huddling together with their mom in a horse stall until it's warm enough to go outside.

When they get a little bigger, they'll stay in a pen at the nearby small-animal farm where five other goats, including their older brother, live.

The brother has a chestnut and white coat and red curly hair that hangs over his face and reminds Rushin of Rod Stewart.

The public can see the goats this weekend.

Lawton Stables is open daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. For information, call 843-671-2586.

Name those kids

We're milking our readers for monikers for the three kids. If you have a suggestion on what the barn should name its new additions, e-mail your ideas to features@islandpacket.com. Lawton Stables is offering a free trail ride and pony ride to the winner (child and parent).
