Five people were sent to area hospitals Thursday afternoon following a three-vehicle wreck on U.S. 278 at Eagle's Pointe.

The wreck occurred shortly before 5:35 p.m. on eastbound U.S. 278, leaving one person trapped in a car, according to Bluffton Township Fire District spokesman Randy Hunter. The highway was shut down in both directions at Eagle's Pointe Drive for about an hour, he said.

One victim was taken by LifeStar air ambulance to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, Maj. Joseph Manning of the Bluffton Police Department said. Four others were taken to other hospitals by ambulance.

The names of the victims and cause of the wreck were not available Thursday evening from the police department, which is investigating the accident.
