Obama wrong on refugee children

newsroom@islandpacket.comJuly 14, 2014

I voted for President Barack Obama twice, but I am sickened by his response to refugee children and mothers from Central America coming here. We help refugees in the Middle East, but our response to these refugees is to house them in abysmal circumstances and then deport them back to the violence that sent them here.

I've heard from Hondurans of violent attacks in their home country, of people dashing into homes and killing everyone in sight to take over the home, of bodies hanging from bridges ...

With great tears I'm sure, the parents who can't bring their children north send them with smugglers, praying they will survive. And we want to turn around and fly them back? They could be sent to relatives or even to families with no children if they had no relatives.

Even when a mother is allowed to stay in the country to await a deportation hearing, she must wear a metal anklet like a released robber. Not only is the government failing, but as buses of children were being transported to a new processing facility in Murrieta, Calif. recently, an ill-minded protester spat in the face of a counter protester who supported the children. We are better than this, friends.
