RJ Bartolomucci, a rising junior at Hilton Head Christian Academy, did something this week that had not been done in nine years.
Bartolomucci won the qualifying medalist award and then went on to sweep all six of his matches to win the Carolinas Golf Association's 37th S.C. Junior Match Play Championship on Friday at Country Club of Newberry.
Bartolomucci defeated Nick Willis of Cowpens 1 up in the morning semifinal match, while Ryan Marter of Columbia Jake Smith of Duncan 2 and 1 in the other semifinal to set up the final match.
In the championship match, both players got off to a smooth start, but Bartolomucci took a 1 up lead after winning the seventh hole with a par.
Marter won Nos. 10 and 13 to take a 1 up lead, but Bartolomucci answered by winning the next three holes with birdies to take two-hole lead heading into No. 17.
Marter did not go easily, though, winning 17 and cutting the lead to 1 up heading into the final hole where each player made par to give Bartolomucci the 1 up victory.
"I played really well this week, especially on Tuesday in the qualifier," Bartolomucci said in a release. " I can't remember when I have played this much golf."
In the girls championship, Morgan Cox of Easley defeated her older sister Maddisen 3 and 2 in their semifinal match. Savanah Goodman of Easley advanced to the final match against Cox with a 5 and 3 win over Greenville's Carly Lyvers. Cox won the final 4 and 3.
