A 15-foot pilot whale beached itself and died early July 10, 2014, on the shore of Hilton Head Island. Tourists gathered for a look at the sea creature as Town of Hilton Head Island employees and officers from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources watched over the carcass while waiting for representatives of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to arrive and conduct a necropsy. Following that, they planned to bury the whale on the beach.
