Brother, sister arrested in Medicaid fraud scheme

The Associated PressJuly 9, 2014

— Two siblings from Baton Rouge have been arrested for a scheme aimed at falsely billing the state's Medicaid program.

The Louisiana Attorney General's office, in a news release Tuesday, said agents with its Medicaid Fraud Control Unit arrested 49-year-old Barbara Smith and 50-year-old Cleveland Smith, both of Baton Rouge, on Monday. Barbara Smith faces two counts of conspiracy to commit Medicaid fraud, while Cleveland Smith was booked on two counts of Medicaid fraud.

It was not known if either has an attorney.

Cleveland Smith provided in-home care services to his sister from November 2013 through January. An investigation, however, showed on numerous occasions that Cleveland Smith falsely billed the Medicaid program for services at times when Barbara Smith was not home but providing private sitting services outside of her home.
