Bluffton's J.D. Lehman qualifies for U.S. Amateur

Bluffton's J.D. Lehman, a former Hilton Head Christian Academy and current University of Louisville golfer, was one of five golfers Tuesday at Columbia Country Club in Blythewood to qualify for the U.S. Amateur.

Lehman shot a two-day total of 7-under 65-70--135 on the 7,142-yard, par-71 layout to tie for third. North Augusta's Matt Nesmith, the 2012 Junior Heritage champion, was the medalist with a 12-under total of 66-64--130.

Columbia's Will Murphy, Inman's Trevor Phillips and Elgin's Ben Fogler qualified, as well. Kelby Burton is the first alternate and Jarrett Grimes is the second alternate.

Bluffton's Bryson Nimmer finished at 3 under and missed a tie for second alternate by a stroke. Also competing and failing to qualify were Hilton Head Island's Matt Rushton, Bluffton's Ben Dietrich, Beaufort's Josh Fickes and Hilton Head Island's Xue Wen Luo.

The 114th U.S. Amateur Championship will be conducted Aug. 11 to 17, 2014 at The Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, Ga.
