Sales tax proceeds could have helped USCB

newsroom@islandpacket.comJuly 8, 2014

As a member of the Hilton Head community for the past 35 years, I'm very disappointed in Beaufort County Council's decision not to place the capital project sales tax proposal on the November ballot. I believe taxpayers should have a voice in that decision.

The many people I have spoken with are very excited for University of South Carolina Beaufort to have the opportunity to build new sports facilities that would create new teams for the university.

As a former high school basketball coach for 26 years, it is very rewarding for a coach to see a student athlete go on to play at the next level. The growth and expansion of the athletics program at USCB provides great opportunity for our local athletes. In our state alone, we have many athletes who are capable of playing at the next level. Let's give them the chance they deserve to compete right here in our county.

Florida Gulf Coast and USC-Aiken are both excellent examples of colleges that, by having top notch facilities, have made a splash in the NCAA playoffs. It has put their schools on the map and increased enrollment, thus giving greater exposure for the communities.

The Sand Sharks could enjoy that same effect. Why not let the Sand Sharks develop the same equal level of excellence in athletics?
