Fireworks exploded inside a mailbox when a Lady's Island woman retrieved her mail Monday, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office report.

The woman told deputies something exploded when she opened the mailbox in front of her Marsh Drive residence at about 8:30 a.m.

She then found several small red cylinder-shaped items on the ground and a medium-sized red cylinder still inside the mailbox, the report said.

Deputies identified the cylinder as a Jumbo M-5000 firecracker, the report said. The mailbox was not damaged.
