A 74-year-old man has been cited in an accident Monday in which his truck hit an Okatie boy riding a bicycle on Hilton Head Island, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Ronald Cofall of Hilton Head was turning right at a red light at the intersection of Office Park Road and Pope Avenue when his Dodge Ram struck the 6-year-old, Senior Trooper Hannah Wimberly said. Cofall had looked to his left before turning, but did not check the right side, where pedestrians were crossing, Wimberly said.

Cofall was cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian in the crosswalk, she said.

The boy was wearing a helmet and was supervised at the time of the wreck, according to Wimberly, who did not know the child's condition Tuesday. He was airlifted to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, which does not release the condition of minors.

Attempts to reach the boy's father were unsuccessful.
