A 40-year-old St. Helena Island man was arrested Tuesday on charges of beating his female partner and pointing a gun at her, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Andre Johnson had been drinking and arguing with the woman throughout the day when he arrived at her St. Helena home carrying a 9 mm handgun, Sgt. Robin McIntosh said. He screamed at the woman, punched her several times and repeatedly pushed her to the ground, according to McIntosh.

At one point, Johnson fired a round into the floor, McIntosh said.

The victim took the gun from Johnson, who ran away but was found soon afterward at his Capers Island Road home.

Johnson was charged with criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature and pointing a firearm at a person, according to court records. He posted a $15,000 bond Tuesday.
