Residents don't pay for school operations

newsroom@islandpacket.comJuly 1, 2014

In response to the letter in Saturday's edition regarding investing in student education, it is true that most homeowners in Beaufort County believe they contribute to the school operating budget through their property taxes.

The truth of the matter is that if you live in Beaufort County not one cent of your property taxes goes toward the school district's operating budget. Can you believe that? If you don't, then just ask your County Council members.

The only property owners who contribute to the schools through their property taxes are owners of second homes and business owners. The long term effect of Act 388 will be to destroy our ability to educate our children.

The only time we as Beaufort County residents pay anything toward our schools is through the sales tax when we purchase some items. A recent study indicates this amounts to about 14 cents per dollar toward our schools.

Shame on all of us in Beaufort County for not paying for our own children's education.
