A 6-year-old boy was airlifted to a Savannah hospital Monday after he was struck by a pickup truck while bicycling on Hilton Head Island, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The boy, whose name was not immediately available, was hit by a Dodge Ram pickup truck at about noon Monday while riding near the intersection of Office Park Road and Pope Avenue, Senior Trooper Hannah Wimberly said. He was taken to Hilton Head Hospital and later airlifted to Savannah Memorial University Medical Center, Wimberly said.

The Town of Hilton Head Fire & Rescue Division took the boy to the hospital and to the Hilton Head Island Airport, where he was airlifted to Savannah, division spokeswoman Joheida Fister said.

Information on the boy's condition was not available Monday.

A Fire & Rescue Division officer took the boy's family from the accident scene back to their car at Coligny Beach, Fister said.

An investigation into the crash continues, to determine who was at fault, Wimberly said. The 74-year-old driver of the pickup truck has not been cited, she said.
