Baker showed how Congress can work

newsroom@islandpacket.comJune 29, 2014

The passing of former U.S. Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker reminds us of what worked in Washington.

The many well-deserved tributes to him cite his civility and willingness to work for the common good.

Baker didn't equate consensus with capitulation, and he never demonized those with opposing views.

His legislative achievements and the respect he earned stand in sharp contrast to the partisan lunacy exhibited by congressional leaders today.
