League 1 baseball title eludes Beaufort Ospreys

The Beaufort Ospreys missed a chance to stay in the hunt for the American Legion League 1 title, as Goose Creek again erased an early deficit to secure the No. 1 seed.

Goose Creek defeated Post 9/207 on Thursday 18-10 as the teams prepare for the final week of the regular season. Beaufort led 7-1 early before the Ospreys' thin pitching gave way.

A 12-run Goose Creek seventh inning buried Beaufort (6-3).

Goose Creek already claimed the edge in League 1 when the Ospreys had to forfeit the teams' previous meeting. Post 9/207 was still alive for the top spot entering Thursday's game.

The game was delayed an hour during the first inning as storms moved through. It ended in the ninth when sprinklers turned on in the outfield.

It was the second time Goose Creek had come back on Beaufort's home field. Earlier this month, it erased a four-run deficit to win 13-12.

Thomas Smith started for Beaufort and pitched into the sixth inning. After Mattison Pike came on to get the three outs in the sixth, Smith attempted to return for the seventh but was not allowed under Legion rules.

David Tilton hit a three-run shot to left field for Beaufort in the seventh.
