Annual 'Patriotic Pilgrimage' to Thomas Heyward, Jr.'s tomb is July 5

The 28th annual Patriotic Pilgrimage to the tomb of Thomas Heyward, Jr., signer of the Declaration of Independence, will be held at 10 a.m. July 5 in Ridgeland. The event is co-sponsored by the Dr. George Mosse (Hilton Head) and the Governor Paul Hamilton (Beaufort) Chapters of the State Society, Sons of the American Revolution.

The speaker will be Smitty Cooler, who was instrumental in helping the state set up the Heritage Trail along the Savannah River. The Color Guard of the NJROTC unit from Hilton Head Island High School will present the colors.

The event is located on Rt 462 in Ridgeland on the right, before you come to the flashing light at "Coolers" Exxon station. Turn right into the driveway at the historical marker. Bring a lawn chair, water and bug spray and wear comfortable shoes.

After the ceremony, there will be a lunch at Jasper's Porch in Ridgeland. Details: Atlee Compher, 843-681-5457
