A Hilton Head Island man began serving a six-year sentence Monday in connection with a 2012 wreck that left his 72-year-old passenger dead, according to court records.

Dustin Steele, 33, pleaded guilty to felony DUI on Thursday and was sentenced to six years in prison, to be followed by five years of probation. In court, Steele told Judge Brooks Goldsmith he would never forgive himself for his actions preceding the July 2012 wreck that killed Francis O'Reilly of Hilton Head Island.

Steele wrecked his car near a traffic circle on Mathews Drive in July 2012, striking a sign and then a tree, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

O'Reilly died of severe injuries to his upper body and head at Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah.
