A Burton resident thought she was dreaming when she awoke to the sound of gunshots early Thursday, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office report.

The 25-year-old woman did not realize her Shanklin Road home had been shot until she got up several hours later and found bullet holes in her closet, the report said. When she searched the rest of her home, she found three shots had been fired into it from the side facing Laurel Bay Road, according to the report.

Two of the bullets traveled through the woman's bedroom, closet and laundry area into her kitchen. One struck a cereal box and entertainment center, while the other hit the refrigerator, the report said.

The third bullet was lodged in the side of the house, the report said.

The victim told deputies she did not know who would want to hurt her or her family. The incident is under investigation.
