Local athletes will compete in the first of this year's Beach Bum triathlons at Coligny Beach on Saturday.

The competition is comprised of a .25 mile swim, six mile bike ride, and a three mile run, all along the hard-packed sand of the beach.

The race begins at 8 a.m. Athletes are encouraged to arrive no later than 7 a.m. Award categories include male and female divisions, both 39 and under and 40 and over, and a team relay. Awards will be distributed around 9:45 a.m.

Refreshments will be offered following the race, and parking is available at the Coligny Beach parking lot off Pope Avenue.

The Conviction Training Facility on Hilton Head Island will host the 3rd annual I CAN Games at Burkes Beach and Chaplin Park this weekend.

The event runs from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and welcomes athletes of all skill levels to compete in four events, including an ocean swim. The competition is family-friendly, and spectators are welcome to attend, free of charge. Included in the weekend's festivities are refreshments and music.

According to a press release, Conviction Training Facility owner Craig Hysell expects more than 400 athletes to participate in the Games.
