The Harbor River Bridge was closed to auto traffic for nearly two hours today due to a malfunction, according to Beaufort County Sheriff's Office alerts.

The half-mile span is the only vehicle bridge that connects St. Helena Island to Harbor Island.

The Sheriff's Office an alert announcing the closure about 1:11 p.m. today. An alert announcing the bridge was reopened was sent about 2:53 p.m.

The swing bridge was also closed for about two hours on May 27 when it reportedly did not fully lock when it opened and closed, county emergency management deputy director David Zeoli said at the time.

The 75-year-old bridge is scheduled to be replaced in 2017.
