Will Miles' busy summer continues with what he hopes is a successful week at Chechessee Creek Club.

The Hilton Head Island resident is a veteran of the American Junior Golf Association's event here, the IJGA Junior Open, having played since he was first able.

Miles finished second at the Jimmy Self Invitational on June 8 at Greenwood Country Club, at 5 under par. He slipped on the final day of the SCGA Junior Championship but said he otherwise played well.

Miles, who will be a senior at Heritage Academy in the fall, got through to U.S. Open sectional qualifying at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville. Md.

Now he will try for an AJGA title before attempting U.S. Junior Amateur qualifying and another slate of junior events that includes another AJGA event in Sea Island, Ga.

"If I play my game, we'll see what happens," Miles said. "You've always got a chance to do something special."

Bluffton's Bryson Nimmer, Matt Lehman and Alec Weary are among the other notable locals in the field, which includes several IJGA students. Twenty-seven are in the field competing for the girls division.

Hilton Head's Andrew Orischak won the event last year at Chechessee Creek, the first AJGA event he had entered. Orischak is back to defend after his freshman year at Hilton Head Island High School.

He shot a 1-under-par 209 in 2013 to win after entering the final round down two strokes.

"It set up well for me, because it's a little narrower off the tee," Orischak said after his victory last year. "You can hit anything from a 3-iron to a driver on most holes, and you're still going to have a wedge into the par-4s. That's really where it gets hard, is the wedge into the greens, because the greens are so sloped and undulated."
