My VA experiences have all been great

newsroom@islandpacket.comJune 13, 2014

I am a Korean War veteran who has been served by the VA for more than 10 years now, and I am sick and tired of reading in the paper and watching on TV the "horrors" that are blamed on the VA.

When you are a large organization you always have problems that crop up that have to be handled. Why doesn't the media tell a balanced story and show the good side as well as the problems that need to be -- and are being -- addressed?

In 2004 when I was having trouble with my knee and could not afford a doctor, a friend asked me if I was a veteran and then suggested I try the VA for treatment. In the years since, I've had two hip replacements, one complete knee replacement and three melanoma cancers removed. I've also received medication for hypertension, annual urology checks and multiple callbacks every three months to make sure I'm OK. And this was all free.

Every time I have had to wait more than 20 minutes, someone has come out to apologize. I know I speak for most veterans treated by the VA when I say, "God bless you all who serve us at all of the VA centers." Every time I have been treated, I always say, "Thank you for your help!" The response I get back every time is, "Thank you for your service."
